The J1S Bicycle Commute Difficulty Scale (Categories I-VII)
I. Good. A beautiful day, with dry roads, little traffic, sunny and clear with the wind at your back and a smile on your face.
II. Slightly Uncomfortable. A bit of a headwind, sprinkles of rain, or just cloudy and dreary.
III. Medium Uncomfortable. More of a headwind, or enough rain to make your clothes damp. Or it’s colder outside than it looked and you forgot to bring your gloves or a better jacket.
IV. Medium-to-Quite Uncomfortable. Strong headwinds, rain to soak parts of your clothes, or snow in the air or on the ground, but not enough as to be slippery. Slush on the ground, but your tires cut through it well enough.
V. Quite Uncomfortable. Heavy rain, very cold temperatures, or lots of snow in the air and on the ground. You arrive wet and/or freezing.
VI. Dangerous. Stinging, wind-driven rain that makes it hard to keep your eyes open, or heavy snow, or ice on the ground. Roads are slippery beneath your tires.
VII. Very Dangerous. The above, plus more than a couple inches of flood water or slushy, slippery snow with ice under it. Difficult to control the bike. Expect to fall over and/or have to stop and walk your bike through sections. Exult when you get to your destination—you’re hard-core, baby.
